Welcome to Gandhāran Studies

To enhance research activities in the region of Gandhara, several national and international academic institutions are busy in survey, excavations and preservations of the culture heritage of the area. One of the most important academic institutions in Pakistan is the Department of Archaeology, now the Institute of Archaeology and Social Anthropology, University of Peshawar, which in collaboration with other national and international organisations and institutions has been actively involved in field activities in the region of Gandhara. The important activities currently in progress  are The Kashmir Smast Archaeological Research Project and The Aziz Dheri Research Project.

The establishment of the journal Gandhāran Studies is an effort to give a proper platform to archaeologists, numismatists, epigraphists and art historians, who are at various stages of their careers and whose research focuses on this key region of modern Pakistan, to share their knowledge.

The journal, edited by Prof. Dr. M. Nasim Khan, was established in 2007 is published annually. It is an internationally refereed journal and deals with the archaeology, architecture, art, epigraphy, history, linguistics and numismatics of ancient Gandhara and its surrounding regions and has been established as a response to the intensive interest in the history of ancient Gandhara.
